Girijamma R: A Journey of Social Service, Art and Commitment to Kannada

Girijamma R is a social worker, artist, journalist and State President of the Kannada Nadu Hitarakshana Samiti. She is also Vice President of GK Royal Foundation. Her work brings together girls’ safety, women empowerment, social awareness, Kannada language and culture, journalism, and the arts.

Her work through GK Royal Foundation has included programs for education, women and child safety, self-defence awareness and humanitarian service. One of the major initiatives associated with her is the Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Self-Defence and Safety Awareness Campaign.

Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Campaign Reached 10,000 Girl Students

The Nirbhaya Vidyarthini campaign was conducted across 60 schools in 30 days and reached more than 10,000 girl students. The sessions focused on personal safety, recognising danger, self-confidence, mental preparedness, self-protection and emergency help.

Girijamma R personally visited schools and spoke with students. A special part of the campaign was her decision to travel without footwear while taking the safety message from one school to another. The campaign was aimed at helping girls understand that awareness and confidence are important parts of personal safety.

Her school visits also gave her an opportunity to speak directly with students and conduct practical demonstrations. The work focused on a simple message: girls should know how to respond when they feel unsafe and where to seek help.

Working for Kannada Language and Culture

Girijamma R has also taken part in activities related to the Kannada language, Kannada identity and the interests of Kannadigas. As State President of the Kannada Nadu Hitarakshana Samiti, she has participated in the Cauvery water movement and the campaign for Kannada name boards.

Her work in this area is connected with the protection and promotion of Kannada language, land, water and culture. She continues to take part in public activities that create awareness about Kannada and Karnataka’s cultural identity.

The 108-Day Bhuvaneshwari Rath Yatra

Another important part of her journey was the 108-day Bhuvaneshwari Rath Yatra across Karnataka. The yatra travelled through different parts of the state with a message related to Kannada culture, unity and pride in Karnataka’s heritage.

During the journey, Girijamma R travelled without footwear and continued the work despite the difficulties involved. She also shared a vision of creating a grand cultural centre dedicated to Mother Bhuvaneshwari in Bengaluru.

The Rath Yatra was inaugurated by Jnanpith Award recipient and writer Chandrashekhara Kambara and Padma Bhushan award recipient and writer Dodda Rangegowda.

A Journey in Acting and Media

Girijamma R is also associated with the film and television industry. She has acted in television serials and other productions, taking on roles such as Inspector and Doctor, along with guest roles.

Her connection with media also continues through journalism. As a press reporter, she has worked on public issues and brought local problems to the attention of authorities and society.

One example involved a school where buses had reportedly not been stopping for nearly 40 years. After the issue was covered in her news report, a bus stop was provided near the school.

Through the Gharjisu Kannada News YouTube channel, she introduces people who have talent and achievements but may not be widely known. The channel also covers social issues, local food, traditions and the cultural richness of Karnataka.

Social Service with a Direct Approach

Across her different activities, Girijamma R has chosen direct contact with people. Her school visits, public campaigns, journalism, cultural programs and community activities have taken her to different parts of Karnataka.

Her social and cultural work has also brought her several awards and recognitions in different fields. These recognitions relate to her work in social service, Kannada activities, journalism and the arts. For her, such moments are connected with the people and causes she has worked with over the years, especially girls’ safety, community awareness and Kannada culture.

Her work through GK Royal Foundation continues to include social awareness, women and girls’ safety, self-confidence and community service. Alongside this, her work in Kannada activities, journalism and acting has given her different ways to connect with people.

For Girijamma R, social service and public work are closely linked with her interest in people, language, culture and community. Her journey continues across these areas, with a focus on service, safety and Kannada culture.
